Ranger Station to Elk Lake

Length: Approx. 31 miles
Highest Elevation:
Fees: Entrance permits are sold spring through fall at park entrance stations. The fee is $5.00 per vehicle ($3.00 per person for bicyclists and bus passengers) and is good for seven consecutive days at any park entrance. A $5.00 per vehicle fee is also collected at the Hurricane Ridge entrance on weekends during the winter. Season passes ($15.00; good for one calendar year) are also available.

Wilderness use permits are required for all overnight stays in the backcountry. During the period from Memorial Day weekend through labor Day weekend, some wilderness areas require reservations. Reservations may be made up to 30 days in advance by calling the park's Wilderness Information Center (WIC) at (360) 452-0300.

At other times of year and for areas which do not require reservations, wilderness use permits are available at all ranger stations and the WIC. The WIC is located just behind the Olympic National Park Visitor Center in Port Angeles.

The wilderness use permit system is currently under review and is subject to change. Possible changes may include wilderness use fees, additional use limitations, in high-use areas and changes in the reservation procedures outlined above. For current information, check this website again or call the Wilderness Information Center.

The Hoh Rain Forest is just that, a Rain Forest.  Reaching near 12 feet per year.  This trail is a unique opportunity to learn about many different species of plant life.  Especially lechens, mosses and ferns.
As you see from the map, from the Ranger Station to the Olympic Guard Station a hiker only gains 400 ft in elevation over 9 miles.  This is a very leisurely walk along well taken care of pathways.  This trail was easy enough for me to take my 4 year old son a week later.
This is a very popular trail for its ease and it is the access to Mt. Olympus.  Plan on seeing people.  Sometimes lots of people.  At the ranger station there is also two loop trails that are accessible to persons with disabilities.  These trails have instructional plaques indicating different species of plant life found in the Hoh Rain Forest.
